Budget briefing

The budget was delivered by the Chancellor on Monday, 29 October. The main travel related announcements were as follows:

• Short-haul APD will remain frozen – for the 9th year running. However, long-haul rates will increase with inflation from April 2020;
• Responding to the recent consultation on VAT and APD in Northern Ireland, the Chancellor confirmed the establishment of a Working Group to consider the merits of short-haul APD devolution;
• A two-year cut in business rates applying to all businesses with a rateable value of under £51,000, along with the establishment of a new £675m fund for improvement and redevelopment of high-streets across the UK.
• e-passport gates will be made available to travellers from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
