Mallorca Hotels introduced to the Travelife Sustainability System

ABTA's FTO team has completed three workshops across Mallorca for hotel and accommodation providers to find out more about the Travelife Sustainability System, the industry’s leading environmental protection programme.

Following on from an agreement made by the Municipality of Calvia in November to encourage local businesses to adopt the scheme, over 100 hotels attended the workshops in the major resorts of Palma Nova, Alcudia and Cala Millor and the Mayor of Cala Millor will sign a formal agreement with Travelife in early June.

As a result of the workshops, 18 hotels were audited by the ABTA/FTO team according to the system.

Customers are introduced to the system through tour operator brochures and websites, and from there they can choose sustainable accommodations as part of their holiday package. The highest performing businesses are awarded with bronze, silver or gold Travelife award.

During the workshops suppliers were given numerous examples of how, by following the Travelife principles, they can reduce negative environmental and social impacts whilst at the same time saving several thousand euros off their energy and water bills.

Chris Thompson, Head of Responsible Tourism for the FTO said: “The feedback from the hotels and accommodations who attended the workshops is very encouraging. There is a clear desire to embrace sustainability through the use of the Travelife System and much support for the Tour Operators in delivering a consistent message to the customer. Sustainability provides a unique opportunity to add value to the product offer and we are all very pleased that businesses in Mallorca want to participate fully in the scheme.” He went on to say “businesses who subscribe to the system automatically qualify to be included in the “Travelife Collection”, a brand new directory of sustainable businesses which is being launched to consumers in June.”

The “Travelife Collection” will be available through the Travelife website www.its4travel.com and referenced widely throughout the industry.
