ABTA and our Members’ Stop Sickness Scams campaign has been shortlisted for a PR Week Award. This recognises the success the campaign has delivered to date in terms of raising awareness of false holiday sickness claims and securing a change in the law.
A loophole in UK law led to an increase of more than 500% in the number of compensation claims to UK travel companies for alleged gastric illness while on holiday – costing UK travel businesses and overseas suppliers tens of millions of pounds.
ABTA and our Members sought to reduce the number of claims by closing the loophole, seeking a ban on cold calling by claims management companies and warning consumers about false claims.
The campaign achieved a change in UK law which was implemented on 7 May 2018 – less than a year after the campaign was launched.
Being shortlisted for the work recognises the hard work by ABTA and our Members, and the change the campaign has achieved. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed until the results are announced in October!
