Senior Sustainability Manager Carol Rose sets out her role and the range of ABTA advice and guidance on offer

I joined as the Senior Sustainability Manager at ABTA in June 2022 moving over from the world of fashion and textiles. I will shortly have been at ABTA for six months and I cannot believe how quickly time has gone by.

I was fortunate enough to join at an important time in ABTA’s calendar, with the signing-off of the Climate Action Guidebook and the first overseas ABTA Travel Convention since 2019.

The Climate Action Guidebook was developed as a collaborative project with Deloitte and outlines how travel businesses can lead the way to decarbonisation. The Guidebook is an online tool, which helps business leaders gain technical knowledge and understanding on carbon reduction and the practical steps their businesses can follow to act. I was proud to launch it at the ABTA convention in Marrakech.

During my years in the fashion industry, I travelled to over 16 countries sourcing and developing products for leading UK clothing brands. I truly valued this part of my work, engaging with different cultures and helping our offshore manufacturers improve their businesses both ethically and sustainably.

Sustainable Travel and Tourism is a natural progression for me. My role at ABTA is to lead the implementation of the ABTA strategy for travel and tourism, across the areas of environment, (including climate change), local impact, human rights, and animal welfare.

I am currently working on the ABTA three year sustainability strategy, developing overarching sustainability initiatives with the ‘Tourism for Good framework.  From this, there will be a plan to continue the next phase of the Climate Action Guidebook taking into consideration the needs of our Members.

As business sectors answer the ‘call to action’ to address climate change and develop a more sustainable industry, ABTA has a wide range of guidance notes and advice which we will add to and update as and when required which you can access here and in the Member Zone.
