Make Holidays Greener returns for 2018 with a ‘Say no to plastic’ theme

Make Holidays Greener is returning for 2018, led by ABTA in partnership with Travelife for Hotels & Accommodations. This year’s campaign will launch in the first week of June and will encourage holidaymakers and the travel industry to make sustainable holiday pledges.

Building on the momentum of David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II television series and the public’s increasing awareness of the damage plastics have on the environment, this year’s theme is ‘Say no to plastic’. ABTA is encouraging the travel industry to inspire customers to find alternatives to plastic - such as using reusable bags or minimising use of plastic straws in drinks, and to tell us about it when they have by either using #MHG18 on social media or contacting us directly.

The campaign will run until the end of August and businesses can also take action themselves - such as running a beach clean or reducing overall plastic usage. Travel companies can contact sustainabletourism@abta.co.uk to sign up.

As well as the ‘Say no to plastic’ pledge, holidaymakers will be able to choose from a further 14 sustainable holiday pledges which will cover all aspects of a holiday from eating local food to reducing their water usage in destination. Members can visit makeholidaysgreener.org.uk to start planning their activities and to read up on last year’s inspiring stories.
