Brexit: Pet travel – urgent update

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), has issued important guidance for pet owners in the event on a no-deal Brexit. Anyone wishing to take their pet to the EU could need to visit an official vet four months before they are due to travel, depending on the arrangements put in place, in order to get the necessary vaccinations. Full details of the changes can be found here.

Given the time required to immunise pets for travel, and the time remaining before the UK exits the EU at the end of March, ABTA feels it is important that Members familiarise your staff with this information. Members with customers who could be affected by the enhanced requirements around pet travel should pass this information on to those customers, enabling your customers to make an informed decision.

While a draft Brexit deal was agreed by the UK Cabinet yesterday, and an emergency summit has been called in Brussels for 25 November, there are a number of steps required to pass the Withdrawal Agreement and no-deal remains a possibility at this time. Given the ongoing uncertainty it is advisable that Members continue with their contingency planning in order to make sure you are prepared, whatever the scenario.

For more information on the potential consequences of a no-deal scenario, please refer regularly to ABTA’s Brexit no-deal scenario paper, which is in the Member Zone of abta.com.
