ABTA statement in response to Egypt protests

We’re aware of protests taking place in Cairo.  We’re in close contact with tour operators and the Foreign Office and have had no reports of any British package tourists being affected by these protests.

We estimate that approximately one million British holidaymakers visit Egypt each year with the vast majority of these based in resorts in the Red Sea area (for example Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada). This is a very considerable distance from Cairo.

ABTA understands that a number of tour operators have cancelled excursions to Cairo, purely as a precautionary measure, however all other activity continues as normal.

We recommend that tourists continue to monitor Foreign Office advice, notably to avoid any political gatherings and demonstrations and respect any advice from local security authorities.
