Communicating Sustainability

20 January 2026
9:30 - 16:30
Venue:
ABTA, 30 Park Street, London, SE1 9EQ

Event details

With a growing focus on responsible and sustainable travel from consumers, regulators and partners, businesses have a valuable opportunity to showcase their environmental credentials with clarity, transparency and credibility.

ABTA’s Communicating Sustainability training day is designed to help travel companies maximise the impact of their sustainability efforts. This event will explore how to share your organisation’s environmental and social progress authentically, avoid the pitfalls of greenwashing, and address the growing risk of greenhushing, where businesses reduce sustainability updates for fear of scrutiny.

As of 2025, the regulatory landscape around sustainability communications is more clearly defined. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2023 is now fully in force, giving the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) the power to impose fines of up to 10% of global annual turnover for misleading environmental claims.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) continues to issue rulings on sustainability messaging in travel, reinforcing the need for accuracy, transparency and substantiation. In this environment, silence is not a safe strategy. Greenhushing can undermine stakeholder trust, obscure genuine progress, and limit your organisation’s ability to demonstrate compliance and lead in a values-driven market.

This training will help you strike the right balance: communicating transparently, responsibly and with purpose. You’ll gain practical insight into building internal processes that support credible external messaging. You’ll also explore how to use storytelling to bring your sustainability work to life and connect with today’s environmentally conscious traveller.

Through expert guidance and industry case studies, you’ll leave equipped to communicate your sustainability credentials with integrity, creativity and impact, and with the confidence to meet both stakeholder expectations and regulatory requirements.
