Brexit: EU settlement scheme toolkit for employers

The Home Office has issued an “EU Settlement Scheme Toolkit” advising UK businesses on how to prepare their EU employees for life after the UK departs the EU. This confirms the situation, agreed in December 2017, where the rights of UK and EU nationals to continue to live and work in their current country of residence will remain in place. However, this is dependent on a deal being reached between the UK and the EU.

Assuming a deal is reached there will be no change to the rights and status of EU citizens in the UK until 2021 at the earliest. The toolkit sets out the key information of the scheme, contains ‘how-to’ videos, leaflets and posters to help Members cascade the information to their staff. The Home Office advises employers with EU employees to begin to provide their staff with this information to increase awareness about the EU Settlement Scheme.

In the event of no-deal exit, it is likely that the UK government would determine the employment rights of individuals in this country.
