By law, every UK travel company that sells flight-based holidays is required to hold an ATOL, which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. ATOL cover means that if your travel company fails and your holiday can no longer go ahead you will be entitled to a refund if you are yet to travel, and hotel costs and flights home if you are abroad.
The scheme is designed to reassure consumers that their money is safe, and will provide assistance in the event of a travel company failure.
However, it is important to note that flights booked directly with airlines are not protected under the ATOL scheme.
ATOL is solely a financial protection scheme and does not provide other assistance if there are other problems with your holiday.
