This new one-day training course will provide a foundation level knowledge of the hazards associated with fire and what to look for when auditing and contracting tourism accommodation.
Learn how to identify risks during the auditing and contracting process and get an understanding of the significance of such defects being identified. Understand what practical steps can be taken around fire prevention in order to ensure good practice within your tourism accommodation.
Use these skills to assess the risks posed in all types of accommodation when conducting audits and safety checks. Take away knowledge to improve your communications with accommodation providers and senior managers when issues arise.
Learn where fire safety specialist advice may be required in specific higher risk situations and the actions that should be taken as a result.
The course will be run by led by Terry Auld, an independent fire and safety consultant who has extensive experience working with the travel industry. Terry is a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers and trains, mentors and monitors auditors from a range of tour operators.
Attendees will be provided with illustrated course notes and a workbook to take back to the office.

Terry Auld is an independent consultant to the travel industry on matters involving health and safety. Following his retirement, as a senior officer with Suffolk Fire Service in 1998 he set up his own fire and safety consultancy.
He became an associate with Ron Wheal Associates, worked in assessing accommodation for UK tour operators and became Operators Director of Ron Wheal Associates in 1999. Terry worked with the Federation of Tour Operators to draft their Health and Safety Preferred Codes of Practice (now the ABTA Tourism Accommodation Health and Safety Technical Guide) and is still a member of the review panel of the guide. In 2003 Terry worked with school travel operators in the formation of the School Travel Forum (STF), preparing technical guidance and establishing audit protocols for accommodation used by school groups travelling overseas. Terry joined Argent Health and Safety as Development Director and continued to work alongside ABTA, FTO, IAGTO BETA and the STF. Terry is a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers and attends the EU Committee for experts in fire safety. Following ‘retirement’ in 2013 he continues to act as a consultant advising on tour operators on H&S issues whilst also doing some training, mentoring and monitoring of auditors. Terry is currently retained by Preverisk, a leading provider of safety related services as an advisor to the board and consultant.
