ABTA – the badge you can trust

ABTA celebrates its 75th birthday this year. The association was set up by twelve travel agents and tour operators who wanted to raise the travel industry standards, ensuring that when people were handing over their hard earned cash, for what is still for most of us the biggest single spend of the year, they could rest assured the company taking their money was reputable, professional and trustworthy. This is still very much the case now, a quarter way through the 21st century.

Why can’t every travel company join ABTA?

Not every company can join ABTA. Applications will be vetted by the association and a committee of ABTA members. If a company does not meet all the ABTA membership requirements we set, they will not be allowed in. Companies are keen to join the association because they also appreciate and respect the good will that ABTA and its members have generated throughout our history, protecting and safeguarding holidaymakers and other travellers. They also highly value the help and assistance we offer them and the extensive work we do behind the scenes on health and safety and sustainability often in partnership with destinations. This work benefits them, but is also yet another reason to trust that your ABTA member is doing the right thing, both for you and your family and the countries you love to visit.

ABTA's Code of Conduct

One of the most fundamental things that companies agree to when they join ABTA is to follow its Code of Conduct. This guarantees the highest standards of customer service and makes sure that you, the customer, can trust that the holiday you are being offered will be just as described. It also guarantees that you will be fully aware of all relevant visa, passport and other entry requirements, increasingly important as travel around the world can be a complex, confusing business.

There are few things in day-to-day life that can compare to the disappointment of a sub-standard holiday, or even worse the shock of being turned away at the departure gate because you don’t have the right travel documentation. Use an ABTA member and you can trust that you are incredibly unlikely to have to go through these unpleasant experiences.

Protection against travel fraud

Unfortunately, fraudsters can target the travel industry like so many other. An easy way to protect your holiday is to book with an ABTA member and for even more peace of mind you can check on our website that a company is legitimate.

So, simply why would you trust your money and holiday dreams to anyone other than an ABTA member?
